Edit your Route and add Variants

Don't settle for the route you downloaded from the internet

By now you should have your route, right?
In my case, I already have the itinerary that is closest to what I want to do. Now I will take my time to edit the route to:

- Modify the final stretch and extend the route. I want to pass through the north face of the Croscat volcano.

- Add a variant to have a shorter option for the route. You never know what might happen; it's good to have several options.

Modify the Track

In my case, I'll change the last stretch of the route and make it pass through the north face of the Croscat volcano. I would like to visit the north face of the volcano to see the 'notch' that was made to extract clay for brick production. Croscat is the last volcano to erupt on the Iberian Peninsula. The volcanic area of La Garrotxa was declared a natural park in 1982. Subsequently, in 1991, the industrial exploitation of the volcano's clay ceased.

There are several ways to modify the route. I will cut the last stretch from the junction and remove the track that I'm not interested in. You can use the same tools to remove any part of the track you want to eliminate from your route.

To add a new stretch, I open the OSM map of Spain and locate it in the highest layer of the data tree, so I can use the FastTrack tool and easily create the new stretch to the parking lot.

To ensure that the new stretch passes through the north face of the volcano, I'll mark two or more points with the FastTrack tool, so I'll make sure the route goes where I want, otherwise Land 9 will directly trace the shortest path.

Once done, I have my route fully edited and adapted to the route I want to take!

Create a Variant

When we go to the mountains, it's interesting to have a planned shortcut in case the weather changes or we don't feel up to completing the entire planned route.

This is easily solved with Land 9, as it allows us to create variants. In my example, I'll create a variant that allows me to shorten the route. With the track in editing mode, I mark the starting point of the variant where I want the alternative path to begin.

To create the variant stretch, I'll do it the same way as before with the FastTrack tool until I bring the variant's path to the parking lot.

Once finished, I have my route with two variants: the longest one with almost 12 km, and, a shortcut as an alternative path of 8 km. In my example, I've only added one variant, you can add as many variants as you need in the itinerary you're planning.

Now it's your turn! If you need to see more examples, you can check out these videos where you'll see more practical cases of route editing.
